The thrill of a new season is always magic - the first hot summer day, the first sign of changing leaves, the first snowflakes - but those first spring flowers are something all their own. I can feel the joy, the relief, that another beautiful, long, cold, gray winter has come and gone, that hibernation is over.

But beyond the stunning colors of spring, I am mesmerized by the details we often overlook on flowers. With a simple color palette and emphasis on texture, I highlighted some of our favorite flowers throughout the season - tulips, peonies and irises.

Acrylic on watercolor paper. All paintings are sealed with an isolation coat to protect the longevity of the paint and finished with a satin varnish.

I couldn't live in a place without all of the seasons (sometimes I wish we didn't experience all of the seasons in a single week...). Admittedly though, spring is usually my least favorite, or at least early spring is. It's often still cold and damp, everything is still brown and looks pretty lifeless. Then the joy that is spring allergy season arrives.

Even with that, there's no other season that brings the kind of instant joy and relief of spring. I always have the deep sense of wonder at the changing colors of the world as one season fades and the other takes over. But that's kind of a slow, subtle burn. Spring, though - the first green bud on a plant, the first daffodil or tulip popping up from the ground, those are always a shocking and welcome surprise. Year after year.
