Grasses & Flowers

For years now I've found so much inspiration in the fields of wild grasses growing across the Kansas plains and through Missouri fields. I spent a lot of time looking out of car windows at such fields as a kid. I was indifferent to them then, and I certainly never thought they'd hold this magic for me this many years later. Their delicate dance in the wind, the magic of the colors, changing through the seasons. I'm even planting my own little prairie grass garden. I have dreams of looking out and seeing only those grasses rising and falling, cresting and dipping across fields. For now, a little area out of my window will be enough.
With these, I capture that feeling of watching the prairies come to life, their magic, to bring a little piece of it inside, a reminder of the wide open spaces waiting.

February 2026
Acrylic on canvas or watercolor paper (gesso-primed). All paintings are sealed with an isolation coat to protect the longevity and the paint and finished with a satin varnish.
This was the catalyst for Brittni Strickland Art. I sat down one weekend in February and after months of not picking up a brush, I poured dozens of prairie grasses and flowers onto canvas.
My grandmother painted delicate watercolors, beautiful realistic pastel flowers. I didn't want to paint flowers because I wasn't her. I didn't want to share these delicate wisps of grass because they came naturally to me, that seemed too easy.
But I didn't want to share the other stuff either - the stuff I tried to make work and just didn't love. It's a lesson I'm constantly learning - to let go, there is beauty in letting things be what they are.
I know I'll paint other things in other styles - I already have and currently am. But I love these and when I just need to put paint to canvas, I think I'll continue to come back to them.
