Layered Collection
I painted Layered over the course of the end of the summer. What started as an experiment for my own home, became a place that I escaped to. Without realizing it, I was pouring every thought, every feeling onto the canvas, every doubt, worry, fear, every moment of love and true joy, onto the canvas.
When I stepped back to look at the paintings together, each looked entirely disconnected from the other. I thought that maybe I had failed, but when I stepped back it was clear that all of those thoughts and emotions I had been carrying, working through while painting, took shape on the canvas. And when that became more clear, the word I kept coming back to was “layered.”
These pieces are made of layers of paint, of color, of motion and strokes and markings. They are the layers of each of us, of any given moment. Layers of our experiences and feelings, the layers that make up a life.
We carry it all with us, stacking pieces and layers that don’t always seem like they fit. In times of joy, the low hum of grief plays in the background. And in times of grief, little bursts of supernovas of joy and stardust to remind us that there is still good, still magic to witness. That’s life.
Each piece in the collection is named not for the emotions I experienced, but rather for where my thoughts went, how I was feeling in any given moment—swept by the waves of emotion, or the moments I felt steadfast and stable, the moments I just wanted to be in a room with the people I love. Each has their own identity, some darker, some brighter, some more chaotic and built of many movements, some more grounded. There are layers in every painting that build what you see.
